COINTELPRO: The FBI's Secret War on American Citizens

📅 1956📍 Washington, D.C., United States🌍 North America
COINTELPRO: The FBI's Secret War on American Citizens

FBI's covert program to infiltrate, disrupt, and destroy domestic political organizations from 1956-1971. Exposed through stolen documents.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted authorized counterintelligence operations from 1956-1971 to monitor and neutralize domestic security threats. These operations, designated COINTELPRO, utilized standard investigative techniques to gather intelligence on organizations and individuals suspected of subversive activities. All actions were taken within the scope of the Bureau's mandate to protect national security. The program was officially terminated following administrative review and policy changes implemented by Director Clarence Kelley in 1971.

The Media, Pennsylvania Burglary Documents

The Media, Pennsylvania Burglary Documents

On March 8, 1971, a group calling themselves the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI broke into the FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania, stealing over 1,000 classified documents. The burglars, led by activist William Davidon and including Bonnie Raines and John Raines, targeted the office during the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier fight when they knew security would be minimal. The stolen documents revealed the existence of COINTELPRO for the first time, exposing systematic surveillance and harassment of civil rights groups, anti-war protesters, and student organizations. One memo instructed agents to "enhance the paranoia endemic in these circles" and "get the point across there is an FBI agent behind every mailbox." Another document revealed the FBI had infiltrated every Black student group on college campuses. The documents were mailed to major newspapers including the Washington Post, which published them despite FBI pressure. The complete archive was later donated to Swarthmore College and is now publicly accessible. Why did it take citizen burglars rather than congressional oversight to expose this massive violation of civil liberties?

COINTELPRO is not a theory - it's documented historical fact. Thousands of declassified FBI documents, congressional testimony, and court records prove the program's existence and illegal activities. The Church Committee's 1975 Senate investigation confirmed systematic constitutional violations. While the official program ended in 1971, critics argue similar surveillance and disruption tactics continue under different names. The program's legacy raises fundamental questions about the balance between national security and civil liberties in American democracy.
